A Story About a Hula Hoop, A Football, and Understanding Scale
Have you ever faced a challenge that required you to think outside the box?
While working on a project in the vibrant city of Bangalore, I was challenged to design a decorative lighting scheme for a five-storey internal atrium. Initially, I considered architectural lighting, but it felt too boring and predictable.
With its warmth, colour, and cultural richness, India inspired me to think beyond the ordinary. 🌟
But then came the tricky part. After developing a few sketches, I was unsure how big the fixture should be...?
In collaboration with the incredibly talented Megha Verma, we decided to get hands-on.
Based on the sketches, we crafted a mock-up of the concept using a hula hoop and a football. 😂
It seemed logical to us.
We constructed a steel wire prototype with the contractor's support and suspended it in the atrium. This experiment gave us a sense of scale, helping us tweak the fixture's proportions, set the dimensions, and confirm the quantities.
Soon after, production was underway.
Inspired by the Ashoka Chakra and the traditional silk spinning wheel, the design blended tradition with a modern feel. Suspended on a pulley system for easy maintenance, it brought a dynamic touch to the ceiling space.
Ultimately, the feature light was not just a functional fixture but a piece of art inspired by the local culture.
The community teams now have their own story to tell.
